Koustiliya: a Tunisian-Italian project for the research and promotion of an archaeological site in southern Tunisia

A multidisciplinary team from the National Heritage Institute (INP) and the University of Rome Tor Vergata is currently carrying out an archaeological field mission at the Koustiliya site (Touzeur), as part of a Tunisian-Italian scientific and cultural cooperation project.

The main objective of this mission is to continue the excavations begun in 2017 at this archaeological site and to undertake the studies necessary for its scientific and cultural enhancement.

The current archaeological excavations are focusing on a large rectangular monument adjacent to the church, comprising several rooms arranged around a central courtyard. These investigations have revealed the presence of several phases of occupation, spanning from the 5th to the 7th century, and possibly beyond.

At the same time, a team of geologists from the University of Carthage (Faculty of Sciences, Bizerte) has undertaken an analysis of the building materials used (stone, mortar, rammed earth, etc.).

Another area of research focuses on architectural archaeology, involving the systematic documentation of the church’s structures. This approach is complemented by a laser scan survey of this particularly well-preserved monument.

The material recovered from the excavations is also being studied by ceramologists, with the aim of identifying the various chronological phases and establishing a typological chronology for a cultural horizon that remains poorly documented in specialist research.

Environmental analysis is also incorporated through the examination of botanical remains from the excavation levels. This approach will contribute to reconstructing the consumption patterns and living conditions of local populations during Late Antiquity.

It should be noted that the primary objective of the project is to ensure the sustainable development of the site by involving all local stakeholders in a participatory process based on harnessing the collective intelligence of all stakeholders (both direct and indirect), in collaboration with researchers from the University of Carthage (National School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tunis), and by organising meetings with a number of regional officials and civil society representatives to define a shared and consensual vision.
