Gar al-Melh fortifications on the final list of heritage sites in the Islamic world

At its thirteenth meeting in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, the Islamic World Heritage Commission agreed to include the ‘fortifications of the city of Gar-e-Melh’, represented by three towers dating from the 17th century, on the definitive list of heritage sites in the Islamic world.

It should be noted that the three forts (Al-Loutani, Al-Wustani and Lazaret) were built in the 17th century (around 1650) and symbolise the fusion of Andalusian architecture and Ottoman craftsmanship.
This historic announcement, made in February 2026, confirms that Ghar El Melh is not only a tourist city, but also an open-air museum that combines architectural heritage with a unique ‘ramli’ system.

The inclusion of these three forts on the Islamic World Heritage List will help to strengthen efforts to preserve and restore them in accordance with international standards and will enhance their global appeal as an international tourist destination.
