As part of an international cooperation agreement with the University of Sassari (Italy), the National Heritage Institute carried out an archaeological excavation campaign at the Henchir Matria site, located north of Teboursouk in the governorate of Béja, from 6 September 2026 to 4 October 2026.
Researchers and students at various levels took part in the work, all of whom worked in perfect harmony to study and showcase two main areas of the ancient city known as Numluli.
– The first sector comprises the Capitol, built in 170 AD. Here, the team uncovered the paving of the public square, a fountain and numerous architectural and decorative elements of the temple (capitals, columns, various geometric motifs and fragments of statues, etc.), all dating from the Roman period.
– The second sector comprises a Vandal basilica built in the mid-5th century AD. It contains the tombs of prominent Christians, various rooms, walls, as well as funerary jars and vertically positioned jars intended for the storage of provisions. The sector has also yielded mosaic panels.
