Restoration work on the El Jem amphitheatre

Following the conclusion of a partnership agreement between the National Heritage Institute (INP) and the American Ambassadors Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, for the rehabilitation and restoration of the archaeological amphitheatre of El Jem, an evaluation and celebration meeting was held on Wednesday 11 November at the INP head office.

The meeting was attended by the Institute’s Director, Mr Tarek Baccouche, the Ambassador of the United States of America, Mr Joey Hood, as well as the team of experts, curators and a number of the Institute’s executives.

The aim of the agreement was to carry out a number of works in the amphitheatre, including the galleries, the amphitheatre, the arena and the underground floor, as well as maintaining the water drainage system.

In his speech, Mr Tarek Baccouche, Director of the National Heritage Institute, highlighted the importance of this partnership, since the American Ambassadors Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage has granted around 430,000 dollars to contribute to the restoration of the Roman theatre at El Jem, stressing that this project is part of the preservation of the national cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations.

Work to rehabilitate and restore the archaeological theatre is still underway, and the Institute has allocated a further 2 million dinars to fit out the amphitheatre square, install a lift for the disabled and restore the mosaics, in coordination with UNESCO’s interests.
