Projet Thuburbo Maius : étude d'une cité africo-romaine

Today marks the conclusion of the seventh archaeological campaign of the Tunisian-Italian project (INP-Manouba-UNIBO) dedicated to the site of Thuburbo Maius (MAECI “Alibi Archaeologies and Old Excavations: Rediscovering Roman Tunisia”). Four years of activity, over four months of direct fieldwork, followed by laboratory activities in Tunisia and Italy, and more than fifty students from the universities of Manouba, Tunis, Carthage in Tunis and Bologna in Italia involved in documentation, surveying, and study, alongside researchers and technicians from the Institut National du Patrimoine. The central focus has been research aimed at the preservation and enhancement of heritage. This began with the Palestra of the Petronii, which already has the necessary dossier for the restoration project.

Even in this latest campaign, the results exceeded expectations. By investigating the presence of greenery in the ancient city, archaeologists uncovered the water management system in one of the most important and hitherto less studied residences of Thuburbo Maius, the so-called House of Nicentius. The Tunisian-Italian team also explored and surveyed parts of the site located outside the city gates, through archaeological, photographic, and topographic documentation of these remains. These three research themes (urban greenery, water and survey) will also be the focus of the next campaign, from October 19 to November 16, 2025.
